More than 300 motorcyclists ensured families in need would have a happier Christmas by donating hundreds of toys to the Salvation Army in the city on Saturday.
Warrnambool Motorcycle Toy Run co-organiser Trevor Warnecke said the parade of motorcyclists for the annual event on Saturday stretched for more than 500 metres.
Blessed with fine weather, the convoy cruised from Rafferty’s Tavern in west Warrnambool to Port Fairy before returning via Koroit.
Mr Warnecke said the event was growing each year and the Salvation Army left with a van full of toys. A free barbecue at the run’s terminus at Lake Pertobe drew a big crowd.
“Everyone enjoyed themselves,” Mr Warnecke said.
The countdown to Christmas and good weather over the weekend also drew big crowds of shoppers to Warrnambool’s central business district for a sidewalk sale that included family activities such as carol singing.
A picnic at the Fletcher Jones gardens yesterday continued the seasonal spirit with hundreds of people enjoying live music, a fashion parade, artists’ market and food stalls.
The big turnout again showed the Fletcher Jones gardens continue to hold a special place in the hearts of many in the Warrnambool community.
