A MOTORCYCLIST in a Melbourne hospital in a serious condition after suffering chest injuries when he collided with a kangaroo near Portland early Wednesday morning.

Portland police Sergeant Martin Flannery said officers were called to the Portland hospital at 11.30am Wednesday after the incident which occurred at 7.30am on a back road west of Portland.
"The middle aged rider was in the Portland hospital suffering chest injuries. After the accident he was driven by his wife to hospital and we were then called to investigate and make a report," he said.
"After being assessed and treated, the man was airlifted to The Alfred Hospital. As of Wednesday afternoon he was in a serious but not a life-threatening condition."
Sergeant Flannery said it was timely to remind motorbike riders and cyclists they were vulnerable on the roads and to be aware of livestock and wildlife.
"At this stage we're not exactly sure what happened to the motorcyclist other than he has been involved in a collision with a kangaroo. We've attended at hospital, been out to the accident scene and details are sketchy but investigations are continuing," he said.
