WRAD director Geoff Soma said it was a coup for the region to score such a prestigious visitor.
“Anyone interested in youth and mental health would value an opportunity to listen to a leading authority in this area,” Mr Soma said.
Professor McGorry, who was named Australian of the Year in 2012 for his work in youth mental health, also has interests in refugee mental health, youth suicide, youth substance abuse and treatment of personality disorders.
His work has helped develop safe treatments and innovative research into the needs of young people with emerging mental health disorders.
Professor McGorry is executive director of Orygen, regarded as the world’s leading research and training organisation on youth mental health. He is also professor of youth mental health at Melbourne University and director of the National Youth Mental Health Foundation.
He has received numerous national awards.
The WRAD meeting will be in the TAFE level 3 B building at 5.30pm on December 12.
