Caroline Reed Robertson, 36, appeared via videolink in the Supreme Court on Tuesday to oppose an application by Channel Nine for a copy of her police record of interview over the murder of 15-year-old Rachel Barber in March, 1999.

Robertson's barrister Gautam Mukherji told Justice Lex Lasry that negotiations had been held with the Adult Parole Board for her imminent release.

In a statement later released to Fairfax Media, the Parole Board confirmed it had considered Robertson's application for parole on October 28 and had decided to release her on January 20 next year.

Robertson was jailed for 20 years with a non-parole period of 14 and a half years after pleading guilty to murdering Ms Barber.

Robertson was 20 at the time when she drugged and strangled Ms Barber with a telephone cord at her Prahran flat.

She kept Ms Barber's body hidden in her wardrobe for two days before burying her body in a shallow grave at her father's rural property.

The Parole Board said Robertson became eligible for parole on August 10, 2013, after having served 627 days in custody before being sentenced on November 29, 2000.

"The purpose of parole is to provide a structured, supervised and supported transition back into the community for offenders, under conditions that are designed to minimise their risk of reoffending," the Parole Board said.

Robertson told the court on Tuesday she was being treated for depression, trauma and anxiety in prison and was concerned that if Channel Nine aired her police record of interview it would impact on her mental health and affect her family.

She claimed that in the past two years her family had been subjected to escalating violence because of media coverage over the case, and her possible release on parole.

Robertson said there had been a number of books written about the case, as well as a movie, I Am You - starring Guy Pearce and Rebecca Gibney - and the media coverage had badly affected her and her family.

Family members had lost their jobs and had had to move to avoid scrutiny.

"I don't mind doing my sentence," Robertson said. "This is my responsibility. I'm the guilty person here. They're []her family][ not."

Justice Lasry said he would have to view the police record of interview before making a final decision as to whether Channel Nine would be granted access to it.

He adjourned the case to a date to be fixed.

In his sentencing remarks on November 29, 2000, Justice Frank Vincent said Robertson had been motivated to kill Ms Barber "by envy of her for her family, her beauty and her personality and ... because you believed that she would be likely to have a happy and successful life of a kind that you anticipated you would never experience".

"At one level it is possible to feel a considerable measure of sympathy and sadness for you, as a young person whose level of self-esteem was so low and whose deep-seated and long-standing sense of self-hatred and envy of others was so intense, that she was prepared to kill in order to achieve an unrealisable and unreal dream," Justice Vincent said.

The judge said it was clear Robertson suffered from "a deeply entrenched personality disorder which contributed to your conduct, and that at this stage at least you represent a real danger to any who may become the unfortunate subject of your fixation".
