Players from the Corangamite and South Western districts joined forces to win the net or handicap section in division two of Golf Victoria’s junior country regions championships at Kyneton yesterday.
The win in the net section comes a year after a Corangamite district side won the same trophy.
Four players from last year’s team were part of the weekend’s success, East Framlingham’s Daniel Kenna, Port Fairy’s Matt Cameron and Chris Roberts and Lismore’s Josh Anderson. Portland’s Kyle Herbertson and Heywood brothers Jayden and Noah McLeod joined the team from the South Western district.
Terang’s Matthew Heard, playing off a handicap of 23, another new face in the side, took out the best individual net tally across the two days. He carded a net 69 on day one followed by a net 71 yesterday.
The team’s success comes ahead of next year’s merger of the two districts.
Corangamite District Golf Association secretary John Snowden said the squad performed well.
“The boys played very well, a good result,” he said.
“They all played well as a team, it was a good effort.”
Peninsula district took out the division two scratch section, with the combined Corangamite and South Western team fourth. Peninsula district had been relegated from division one after last year.
In the girls’ Kay Mahlook Shield, a makeshift South Western side finished runner-up to Goulburn Valley. South Western’s team of Heywood sisters Rebecca and Lindsay Bryden and Hidden Valley’s Tylah Hodgson performed well after Georgia Bryden suffered a shoulder injury last week, forcing her out of the competition, which was also played at Kyneton.
