Sixth-placed Hawkesdale is keen to be the biggest mover of all on a tight A grade ladder.
The fourth, fifth and sixth-placed sides each have two wins and three losses from five games, one win ahead of seventh-placed Grassmere
But Hawkesdale captain Ben Julius senses an opportunity today and tomorrow. His Cats face fourth-placed Wangoom today and then back up tomorrow with a clash against winless Mailors Flat.
“That third, fourth, fifth and sixth, it’s going to be a real dogfight all season to cement that third and fourth spots for the finals,” Julius said.
“It’s going to be a week-to- week thing.”
Adding to the intrigue is other teams’ draws. Wangoom faces third-placed Purnim tomorrow, while the undefeated Killarney meets fierce rival Panmure (second).
Julius said the Cats needed to build some winning momentum after consecutive losses.
“I’m confident going into both of them,” he said.
“Our form hasn’t been too bad. We’ve been batting well and the bowling lets us down and then we bowl well and the batting let us down. If we could get both the batting and bowling together on the same day it would be good.”
The Cats welcome back opening bowler James North today and former skipper Murray Habel, who were unavailable last week. While the Cats are still below full strength, Julius is confident his side can do well.
In other matches today, Killarney hosts fifth-placed Yambuk while Grassmere faces arch-rival Purnim. Bottom side Mailors Flat has a daunting home game against Panmure.
