Historians and interested locals are expected to gather for the two-day series of events next month in the Peterborough region focused on the Antares shipwreck, which occurred in December 1914.
Retired farmer and amateur historian Rex Mathieson said the group was still interested in people coming forward with information on those involved in the shipwreck a century ago. “It’s the last roll of the dice, an end of an era if you will,” Mr Mathieson said.
“We are known as the Shipwreck Coast and the Antares was the last of the true shipwrecks. So this centenary commemoration is the last of its kind.”
The two-day commemorations will kick off on December 12 with an event at Childers Restaurant with guest speakers John Mathieson, Sean McNaulty and Ron Cashmore.
A plaque unveiling will occur the following afternoon with a dinner on December 13 at the Nirranda Football Club complex.
The three-course meal will include a speech from noted shipwreck historian Donald Walker, a project by Nullawarre Primary School pupils and a fireworks display.
Tickets for the Saturday evening event are $35 per person and are available at Radfords service station in Port Campbell, the Timboon Provedore, Childers Restaurant in Nullawarre, Kathy Burl Groceries in Peterborough, McDowell’s Grocers in Nullawarre, Camperdown Historical Museum and Flagstaff Hill.
