Jason Young has left his post at Surf Coast Shire Council to overlook environmental regulation through compliance and enforcement across Greater Geelong and the south-west plus Ararat.
Yesterday’s announcement follows criticism from some Warrnambool City councillors last week about the lack of local EPA officers to investigate complaints from the community and the reliance on council officers to do initial investigations.
Mr Young was governance and risk manager at Surf Coast Shire and has also worked with the Australian Securities and Investments Commission, the State Revenue Office, Local Government Investigations and Compliance Inspectorate and as a police officer in Victoria and Queensland. He said he looked forward to developing partnerships with local communities and other stakeholders to reduce environmental risks.
“I’m very fortunate to be surrounded by passionate and skilled staff at EPA,” he said.
EPA environmental regulation director Liz Radcliffe said Mr Young’s strong regulatory background would ensure the authority continued “to deliver on its vision of a healthy environment that supports liveability and prosperity in the region”.
