The six-year-old mare won the St Arnaud Cup at her last start. The victory followed cup wins in the Great Western and Halls Gap Cup at Ararat last summer.
Trainer Paul Jones thought about missing Mortlake and heading straight to the Dunkeld Cup on November 15 after her St Arnaud win but changed his mind.
“I had considered going straight to the Dunkeld Cup but she has done so well after her St Arnaud win that I thought we might as well have a crack at the Mortlake Cup,” Jones said.
“She really toughed it out to win the St Arnaud Cup. She only got there by a nose but would have been unlucky not to have won. I will consider taking her for the Dunkeld Cup but it all depends how she runs today.”
Jones said he was confident Spanish Vixen would be suited by the tight Mortlake circuit.
“I don’t think the Mortlake track will hold any issues for her. She’s drawn a good barrier in the small field,” he said.
“She’s won two of her five starts over 2000 metres so I can’t see any worries about the distance of the race.”
Mount Gambier trainer Wayne Walters holds a strong hand in the cup.
He will saddle up Babazaar and last-start Warrnambool winner Holly Holy.
The first race is scheduled to start at 1.07pm and the Mortlake Cup is due to begin at 4.42pm.
