Minister for Polwarth Terry Mulder and Corangamite Shire Council mayor Chris O’Connor unveiled the new building.
The shire’s community services manager Helen Durant said the extension would allow more children a spot at the preschool.
“The pressure on getting a place at the kindergarten will be alleviated with the extra room,” she said.
“Timboon has historically had high levels of three-year-old kindergarteners. Because of changes to staff/child ratios, there was pressure on the number of children who could attend.
“If you look at population projections, the population of zero to four-year-olds is increasing. We’re looking to the future to meet the needs for early-year services.”
The seamless extension includes a new classroom space and children’s bathroom.
Kindergarten teacher educator Barb Foster said the new room was a wonderful addition and the children had observed the construction process over the past six months.
“Our children have watched it develop from the concrete slab to the finished classroom,” she said.
“We are very fortunate that the shire has given us brand new furniture for the room as well.”
State government invested $292,000 in the project, adding to the $10,000 contribution by Corangamite Shire.
“Today’s opening is great news for the families living in Timboon,” Mr Mulder said.
“It marks the completion of a project that has improved the quality and amenity of the preschool, while giving more families access to its highly-regarded kindergarten programs in 2015.”
