Police Western Region road safety advisor Acting Senior Sergeant Sean Halley said Operation Furlong runs from Friday until Tuesday night and will include an increased police presence in the municipalities of Warrnambool, Moyne, Corangamite, Glenelg and Southern Grampians.
"The major focuses for the operation are speed, distraction, and alcohol and drug impaired driving," he said.
"The aim, in addition to detecting offences, is to provide a highly visible and mobile police presence to reinforce positive driving behaviours and lessen the incidence of road trauma."
Acting Senior Sergeant Halley said the Melbourne Cup long weekend had proved problematic for police in the past due to an increase in traffic associated with local social events linked to the Cup carnival.
"Previous years have seen an increase in road trauma and the enforcement of alcohol/drug impaired drivers," he said.
"This year we are aiming for no fatal collisions, in fact the target is no collisions at all."
The police road safety advisor said south-west road users needed to take some responsibility for their actions.
"I make no apology for a strong police presence and low tolerance to all offending," Acting Senior Sergeant Halley said.
"This is not the weekend to choose to flout the rules. It is, as always, our aim that all road users enjoy the long weekend and arrive at their destinations safely," he said.
