Andrew Johnstone and Stephen Griffin will today start their Australian Nationals campaigns in the New South Wales capital.
The pair, members of the Warrnambool and District Drag Racing Association, are up against about 60 other drivers in the super sedan class.
Johnstone is racing his Holden VT Commodore, while Griffin will chase glory in his Holden LJ Torana.
The class features vehicles resembling everyday cars, but with modifications under the bonnet to increase their speed and acceleration.
The quickest drivers, such as Sydneysider Robert Campisi, can reach 420km/h in under six seconds on a quarter-mile (402-metre) strip.
Portland’s Chris Farrell, in his altered dragster, and Colac’s Justin Russell, in his Chevrolet Camaro, are also racing in Sydney.
The weekend marks the final round of the Australian National Drag Racing Association season.
Organisers have received about 340 entries and expect about 20,000 spectators.
