The annual Upwelling Festival marks the importance of the marine phenomenon known as the Bonney Upwelling — a spring ocean upsurge that brings all manner of sea life to Portland’s waters for a feeding frenzy.
The festival will begin with a blessing of the fleet, throwing of the cross and community breakfast from 7.30am.
Throughout the day, the Bentinck Lawns will feature markets, music and a Museum Victoria marine display, while on nearby Bentinck Street there will be a parade from 10.30am.
There will also be children’s activities and entertainment at the angling club, including regular readings of the classic picture book There’s A Sea In My Bedroom, and giveaways of copies of the book.
One of the most noticeable aspects of the festival will be the giant inflatable whale named Bonney, which will be the site of a special educational talk for children on blue whales by Dr Peter Gill.
The educational aspects aren’t just for kids, with a range of guest speakers holding a series of talks at the Richmond Henty’s Blue Room, covering topics such as the Bonney Upwelling, blue whales, Portland’s whaling history, sea turtles and blue-fin tuna.
There will also be various artistic projects scattered around the town.
But not all of the fun will be restricted to the land. Whaleboat races will be held from noon, while a rubber duck derby will also be a highlight from 4.30pm.
