Harry Boyd, Joseph Mahony, Patrick Drake and Wihan Van der Merwe dominated their four pool games and semi-final in Swan Hill to book a spot in the under 13 boys’ tournament’s decider on Monday.
Central Gippsland ended South West’s dream run, relegating it to second place in a 4-42 to 2-31 grand final result.
South West knocked off Mornington Peninsula, East Gippsland, Central Highlands and Northern Mallee to top its pool.
It cruised past Goulburn in its semi-final 6-49 to 0-15 to win through to the first-versus-second play-off against Central Gippsland.
All four boys collected singles wins in the semi-final but Harry was the only player to triumph in that format in the decider, defeating James Mercer 9-7.
Wihan and Joseph combined to win their doubles rubber in the final.
South West network tennis co-ordinator Andrew Drake said the Warrnambool-based team highlighted its ability in the four pool games, winning 22 of 24 sets.
“I think we were very consistent and at the end of the day we had an even team and they all contributed well,” he said.
“Before the finals we only lost two sets so to me that is as even as you can get.
“Harry only lost his doubles in the final and that was it, so he did exceptionally well.
“Harry’s final in his singles was an awesome match and he ended up winning 9-7.
“He dug deep and to beat a quality opposition player was an awesome effort.
“It was a long match and the conditions were terrible — windy and gusty.”
Harry, Wihan and Patrick are among a group of Warrnambool players who have committed to the Bendigo International Pro Tour silver-level junior tournament this weekend.
