Goggin, who plays off a handicap of plus one, carded a two-under-par 70 in the second round of the Warrnambool Golf Club A grade championship to open a six-shot lead at the halfway mark.
Goggin started the championship with a three-over 75 on Saturday before producing the low round of the event so far in yesterday’s calm morning conditions.
Goggin, who also plays at Hamilton, claimed the district championship in September for the second consecutive year. He is chasing his first Warrnambool club championship.
Four-time winner Alistair Gillin and Dale Cook are tied for second after both had rounds of 74 and 77.
Steve Malone and former winner Brian MacKenzie are nine shots behind Goggin.
In the club’s B grade title race, Jeremy Tobin (81, 83) holds a five-shot buffer from Andrew Griffiths (82, 87) while Ash Johnstone is a further shot back after rounds of 89 and 81.
Anthony Westwick (84, 91) holds a two-shot lead at the halfway mark in the C grade championships, two clear of John Nestor who has a two-shot advantage over third-placed Euan Cameron.
In D grade, Adam Bean, after rounds of 100 and 90, has a six-shot buffer on Dominic Tobin (99, 97) while 92-year-old Jack Bullen, a World War II veteran, is third, one shot further back after rounds of 97 and 100.
The championships climax next weekend with the third round on Saturday. The top nine players in each grade after 54 holes qualify for Sunday’s final round.
