Brothers Jackson and Zac Merrett will be absent from the line-up to take on Pomborneit at the Camperdown Showgrounds today.
The Essendon footballers showed their skills were not limited to the AFL when both made strong contributions in Bookaar’s win over Heytesbury Rebels last week.
Zac made 37, while Jackson was miserly with the ball, taking 1-12 off his 10 overs.
Bookaar coach Fraser Lucas said their availability would vary week to week but they should be right for the next game.
“They are both good cricketers and they want to contribute and be part of the team,” Lucas said.
“It is a bit of a thrill for the young blokes at the club getting to play and train with Jackson and Zac. It does create some excitement.”
Bookaar is the perfect environment for the Merretts, with the club’s division one players aged 21 and under.
The exception is veteran all-rounder Simon Baker, who at 38 is still one of the team’s best players.
Baker was a key contributor in last week’s victory as he produced a solid double of 2-25 and 78.
The other highlight was the form of 14-year-old Dominic Cunningham, who took 3/34 with his medium pacers.
Lucas said he was hoping his team could continue its strong form today.
“The aim now is to continue to build on that form and play at that level consistently.”
Bookaar goes into today’s game favourite after Pomborneit lost its opening- round encounter to Noorat.
Noorat hosts Mortlake, also a first-round winner.
Terang looks to make it two from two when it takes on Heytesbury Rebels.
Simpson is at home to Cobden, with both teams looking for their first win of the season.
