A PAINTER caught racing another vehicle from Warrnambool’s Caramut Road traffic lights on April Fools’ Day will have to complete a safe driver program.

Jarrod McKenzie, 22, of Donovans Road, Warrnambool, pleaded guilty in the Warrnambool Magistrates Court this week to driving a vehicle in a race on a highway and careless driving.
He was not convicted, fined $750, had his driver’s licence suspended for seven days and will have to complete a safe driver awareness program.
Police said that at 6.30am on April 1 Mr McKenzie was driving a blue Holden Commodore station wagon west on Raglan Parade when he stopped beside another vehicle at the Caramut Road traffic lights.
He accelerated quickly and was soon after intercepted by a police officer.
Mr McKenzie made full admissions to police and surrendered his vehicle for a month under the hoon legislation.
He said he “just went for it” and his intention was to get in front of the other vehicle.
“It was just stupid. It was a split-second stupid decision,” McKenzie said.
Magistrate John Lesser told Mr McKenzie that such driving was potentially dangerous and the road rules were in place to reduce the number of accidents.
