But they all agree it should not be scrapped.
Parents of younger children, however, wanted more “simple” attractions.
The Standard sought reaction from senior pupils at St Joseph’s Primary School to news that the festival’s future was under a cloud after it posted a $593,000 loss and experienced a sharp drop in patrons this year.
Six pupils interviewed had attended for at least five years and called for the event to be retained and improved.
Here’s some of what they had to say:
Ben Howard: “It is my favourite public event and festival.” Suggestions: different sections for age activities; more sports stars; an autograph tent; a talent-test zone and cooking classes.
Daniel Mahoney: “I’m now 11 and still enjoy going with my mates.” Suggestions: more sports like golf nets, cricket stumps, footy targets and tennis nets.
Ally Mellblom: “I’d love to bring my own kids there one day.” Suggestions: more sports games, more pets and an animal show, a haunted house, different age zones.
Le’Arna Beare: “It is a great tourist attraction.” Suggestions: more face painting, more food variety and cheaper drinks, more areas to sit and eat, a meet-and-greet section with celebrities.
Katelyn Grant: “It would be really sad to see it go.” Suggestions: bring back the rock climbing wall, dome and “star thing”, get some rides, cooking, sports stars, more X-Factor stars.”
Tanah Anderton: “I would miss all the times with my friends and family.” Suggestions: another location because the Civic Green gets wrecked, maybe a sandy area where nothing will be damaged, add an autographing tent.
