About 5000 people were estimated to have attended the CopRice Cobden Spring Festival, which ran from Friday evening until yesterday.
“We had a great weekend with fine weather that really encouraged people to get out,” organising committee member Barbara Cowley said.
The weekend kicked off with a Friday evening junior angling competition at Lake Cobden that introduced 38 youngsters to the joys of mainly not catching fish —three eels were caught but no trout or redfin.
The highlight of the weekend was Saturday’s grand parade through the main street.
The best entry award went to the Camperdown-Timboon Rail Trail Committee, while the award for most amusing entry went to the CWA, whose members were making scones as they travelled in the back of a utility.
Events included novelties such as the duck race and involves sweepstake betting on which rubber duck will be blown to the finish line in the fastest time.
The busking competition was won by Warrnambool’s Cooper Lower, with the Groovy Grannies, of Cobden, second and Jayden Haynes, of Geelong, third. There was a pet parade, a dog jump, a landcare display highlighting garden escapees that have become pest weeds, market stalls and many events for children.
“We don’t charge admission and we try to make it as family friendly as possible. This was our 19th festival and it was probably our best so far. We just try to make some improvements every year,” Mrs Cowley said.
