AUSTRALIA is experiencing its highest fertility rate since the early 1970s, so it’s little wonder yesterday’s Baby and Child Bonanza lived up to its name.

Hundreds of families flocked to St Pius Hall in west Warrnambool to snap up everything from baby books to bassinets as part of a fund-raiser for the Australian Breastfeeding Association (ABA).
Christine Brunt was one of many parents on the hunt for a bargain yesterday and said the market offered a range of products at competitive prices.
“It’s been interesting having a look around,” Mrs Brunt said.
“They grow up so fast, so you’re always on the look out for the next size up in clothing or whatever.”
Yesterday’s market was an even split between new and second-hand goods with the entire St Pius gymnasium packed with stalls.
ABA Warrnambool group leader Tanya Morrison-Gass said organisers aimed to provide a mix of products and prices for all types of new families.
“It’s one of our main events of the year so it’s great to receive that support from the community,” Ms Morrison-Gass said. “A lot of mums and dads find the day convenient because you can do a lot of shopping in the one place for things you might have to shop at six or seven stores for.”
ABA trainee counsellor Emma Moore said young families from across the region ventured to yesterday’s market.
“Absolutely, we’ve seen plenty of people coming in with prams but also a few pregnant bellies too,” she said. “Plenty of people take the opportunity to prepare before the birth or some come in to upsize as their babies get that little bit bigger.”
