Stratum Star and Lucky Hussler, both trained at Weir’s Warrnambool satellite stable, won black-type races for Victoria’s leading trainer on Saturday and are being aimed at feature races at the upcoming Flemington carnival.
The quietly spoken Weir said after Lucky Hussler won the group 3 $150,000 Moonga Stakes he was appreciative of the hard work from his stable staff in Warrnambool.
“Stratum Star and Lucky Hussler will go back down to the boys at the beach for a break,” Weir said. “We’ll give them a freshen-up at the beach. All my staff in Warrnambool do a great job and we would not have the success we have without them.”
Stratum Star won the listed $120,000 Crown Lager Stakes while Weir’s other Warrnambool runners — May’s Dream, Signoff and Vain Attraction — ran good races.
Daniel Bowman, who looks after Weir’s Warrnambool operation, said the results were rewarding.
“It was a big day for the stable — to have two winners from the Warrnambool stable on Caulfield Cup day is a great result,” Bowman said.
“It’s one of the biggest race days on the racing calendar. It takes a lot of work to get the horses fit to run in the feature races,” he said. “The beach has played a big part in the success of the stable. We just take the horses down to the beach for a swim or a wade and it does their minds the world of good.”
Stratum Star will now be aimed at the group 3 $200,000 Carbine Club Stakes on November 1 while Lucky Hussler’s next outing is likely to be in the group 1 $1 million Emirates Stakes on November 8 at Flemington.
Bowman said the stable was happy with the efforts of May’s Dream to run fourth in the Tristarc Stakes and Signoff to finish third in the David Jones Cup.
“May’s Dream’s main goal is the Myer Classic on the opening day of the Flemington carnival,” he said. “She should be suited by the 1600 metres while Signoff runs in the Lexus on Derby Day.
“Signoff must win the Lexus to sneak into the field for the Melbourne Cup. He will appreciate the 2500 metres of the Lexus.”
Ciaron Maher had a day of mixed fortunes with Set Square winning the $120,000 Ethereal Stakes. She may now take her place in the $1 million Crown Oaks on November 6 while Azkadellia was a good thing beaten, running second in the Yellowglen Plate. Light Up Manhattan ran fourth in the $750,000 Caulfield Classic and is a likely runner in the $1.5 million Victoria Derby on November 1.
Girl Guide, bred at the Union Station in Woolsthorpe ran second behind Sweet Idea in the Tristarc Stakes.
