Damage to lines on Rooney’s Road in west Warrnambool caused by gusts of up to 90km/h shut down an entire feeder line at 6.29pm.
A Powercor spokesman said 4285 customers between the north of the city and Koroit were initially affected, although all but 400 had power restored by 8.25pm, with the rest expected to be back on line by 9.30pm.
Heavy rain accompanied the short, sharp storm front, which followed a day of warm and strengthening northerly winds. Warrnambool’s top temperature was 23.5 degrees shortly after 6pm.
As the wind swung to the west it peaked at 91km/h in Warrnambool, 82 km/h at Portland Harbour and 70km/h at Port Fairy.
It is also believed to have shut down traffic lights on Raglan Parade at the Laverock Road and Caramut Road intersections and at Albert Street-McMeekin Road.
A tree was also brought down at Spring Flat Road, Bushfield, near the Wiggs Lane intersection.
