The Warrnambool Orchid Club will hold its annual show at Warrnambool College on Saturday and Sunday and club secretary Helen Gower said they were hopeful there would be plenty of delicate, colourful flowers on display.
“It hasn’t been the best year for orchids, but we are sure there will still be plenty on display, we all have our fingers crossed our best orchids will be in flower,” she said.
“The show has been running for more than 20 years and we always have a great display. We are expecting at least a dozen stands this weekend.”
Mrs Gower said judges would cast their eyes over the displays and present awards across a range of categories.
“They have criteria to follow, things like flowers pointing in the same way, the number of blooms and the health of the orchid,” she said.
“There is also a fair bit of luck involved, you can never tell if your best orchid is going to be in flower for a show, or just before or just after.
“And of course there will be judges’ perception as well, whatever catches their eye.”
Mrs Gower said the weekend’s show at Warrnambool College on Grafton road would also involve demonstrations about potting and caring for orchids. It starts at 10am both days.
