Moyne Shire councillors have backed a call from Cr Jill Parker to use discretionary funding to protect the old tip site north of the main beach.
Cr Parker has successfully lobbied to allocate $60,000 for an addition to the rock wall which is currently in place near the old tip.
“Council has discretionary reserves allocated to several areas, including waste facilities,” Cr Parker said.
“The reserves are there to deal with rehabilitation of landfill sites which are over and above recurrent costs.”
Cr Parker said the big seas that lashed Port Fairy during winter had caused significant damage to the dunes.
She said while $60,000 would not go as far as she would like, something needed to be done.
“We all know what a major issues erosion is along the Port Fairy coastline and we need to be proactive.
“The rock walls have shown they have a positive impact so to extend it makes good sense.”
Earlier this year a 200-metre-long rock wall was built near the old tip site. Data collected by a group of community volunteers showed the wall had helped protect the dunes against the wild winter weather.
