The man aged in his 70s slipped down the embankment into the river opposite the town's Albion Hotel-Motel about 1.50pm.
Due to the river's cold temperature, the man had some cramping and was unable to get out until police arrived and pulled him in with a rope.
A spokesman for Ambulance Victoria said paramedics assessed the man but he did not require further treatment.
