The program is a joint initiative of the Corangamite, Moyne, Southern Grampians, Glenelg and Colac Otway shires and the City of Warrnambool, which in 2012 were awarded more than $1.3 million in funding by the federal government to implement the program.
The LED street light globes were installed in Terang, Noorat, Cobden and Timboon last year and will be provided in Camperdown, Skipton, Lismore, Derrinallum, Darlington, Simpson, Port Campbell and Princetown this month.
The new LED globes provide a 77 per cent reduction in energy use, reduce light spill and improve street safety.
Corangamite Shire environment project officer Jileena Baensch said the new LED street lights would also provide financial savings for the council.
The process of changing street light globes takes less than five minutes and is completed with minimal disruption to traffic, allowing cars to still park on the street.
