The club is set to lobby Capital Football, the Victory and the Wanderers about taking part in a five or six-team "festival of football" at Viking Park as part of the A-League pre-season next year.

Tuggeranong was beaten 6-0 by the Victory at Viking Park last week in the FFA Cup round of 16, ending its fairytale run of part-timers against some of Australia's biggest names.

But the spectacle of more than 5000 fans turning up has prompted officials to start planning for more A-League teams to visit the capital in the coming years.

The pre-season tournament would be an annual event, with Canberra's clubs given a chance to join Tuggeranong in playing against professional rivals.

Tuggeranong's FFA Cup appearance renewed calls for a Canberra A-League bid, but the FFA has all but ruled out expanding the competition to the capital in the near future.

Tuggeranong president Jon Thiele is focused on ensuring the sport has a regular presence in Canberra.

"We want to invite the Melbourne Victory back and perhaps host a pre-season friendly campaign in a festival of football," Thiele said.

"We'd invite two A-League clubs, the Victory and potentially the Wanderers, to join two clubs in Canberra and Tuggeranong. We'd host that with four or five games over a weekend at Viking Park.

"We just want to build on this. We've shown what we can do with an amateur organisation and we built a great product.

"The Melbourne Victory were absolutely glowing in their approval and we'd love to have them back in the coming years.

Tuggeranong put $35,000 into hosting the FFA Cup last week. It reported to a board meeting on Monday night that the club pocketed a profit from the biggest game in the club's history.

A-League teams have made Canberra a regular stop in their pre-season campaigns in recent years.

Canberra FC has spent almost $30,000 on hosting Sydney FC and the Wanderers at fixtures at Deakin in the past two months.

Tuggeranong views Viking Park as the "ideal venue" for matches – 5150 fans turned up for the match against the Victory, which was shown live on national television.

"Canberra Stadium is too big for those sorts of games and McKellar and Deakin are too small ... Viking Park fits perfectly in the middle," Thiele said.

The hype surrounding the FFA Cup clash was that teams were playing in an Australia-wide knockout tournament. The romance of that scenario would be hard to match in a pre-season weekend of friendlies.

Tuggeranong hopes it can replicate the success of its first match against an A-League opponent.

"I'm not surprised about the traction of the A-League for Canberra campaign ... whether Canberra is ready for that now, I'm not sure," Thiele said.

"But we are certainly looking at a way to keep the momentum going so that football has a presence."

Tuggeranong is still waiting to find out whether the fans who lit flares at the game have been sanctioned by the FFA.

Fans threw flares on to the field in the second half in the clash against the Victory, an action which carries a penalty of a five-year ban and fines.

Tuggeranong could also be fined, but it is yet to be contacted by officials about the incident.
