Girl Guide, trained by David Hayes and Tom Dabernig, won the group 3 race by a nose from A Time For Julia with Shamal Wind a short half-head away in third place.
The win of Girl Guide was the fourth victory for the training combination of Hayes and Dabernig on the nine-race program.
Hayes was full of admiration for Girl Guide, which raced wide for the 1200-metre race.
“It was a very tough and very good win. It was very important for that mare to pick up black type as she is a half-sister to Gregers,” Hayes said. “Girl Guide’s main aim in this preparation is the Myer Classic on Derby Day.
“We’ll work out a series of races over the next few days to get her into the Classic.”
Woolsthorpe’s Colin McKenna, who bred Girl Guide at the Union Station said the black-type victory was exciting.
“She broke her wither and was shin sore three times as a young horse,” McKenna said.
“There were times when we never thought she would ever race.
“Full credit to Janice and the staff at the Union: they nursed her back to good health. It’s wonderful to win a group race with her.
“Girl Guide is like her half-sister Gregers — they both give 100 per cent in their races.
“We raced Satnav, which is the mother of Girl Guide and Gregers. Satnav was an excellent brood mare but unfortunately she has died.”
Saturday’s victory took Girl Guide’s record to six wins from eight starts. Her other two starts resulted in minor placings. Other winners for Hayes and Dabernig on Saturday were Firehouse Rock, Fast ‘N’ Rocking and Star Fashion.
Group 1-winning mare May’s Dream, trained from Darren Weir’s Warrnambool satellite stable, showed she is in for a successful spring campaign when she finished seventh behind Girl Guide. May’s Dream made good ground in the home straight after being well back early in the race. Weir has targeted the group one $500,000 Myer Classic on November 1 at Flemington for the four-year-old.
