Hamilton police Sergeant Paul Stanhope said that at 10.45pm on Thursday night officers were called to a hazmat incident, with petrol leaking from a vehicle involved in a collision along Hamilton's Kenna Avenue.
"The driver of a utility had crashed into a parked vehicle. As a result the parked vehicle was pushed some 26 metres up the street," he said.
Sergeant Stanhope said after the collision the ute driver ran from the accident scene.
"Police located the male driver at an address nearby. He was later breath tested with an alleged result of .16. The 23-year-old Hamilton man will be charged on summons at a later date," he said.
Sergeant Stanhope said when police officers initially attended the accident scene they feared there had been a fatality due to the extensive damage to both vehicles.
He said it was the second high drink driving reading in Hamilton this week and both incidents had resulted in an immediate loss of driver's licences.
"On Wednesday morning at about 1am in Thompson Street, Hamilton, police intercepted a motorcycle.
The rider of that vehicle was breath tested with an alleged result of 0.136," he said.
"A 38-year-old Hamilton man will be charged on summons to appear in court," he said.
