A man was killed in a car crash on EastLink in outer Melbourne on Thursday night.

Police said the 40-year-old from Bayswater North was driving to band practice when his Ford sedan crossed three lanes of traffic and crashed into a light pole near Ferntree Gully Road in Scoresby at 7pm.

No other cars were involved and there was no one else in the car.

"There was no reason for him to run straight off the road," Knox Highway Patrol Senior Constable Kate Fisher said.

"We cannot fathom why."

She said investigations were continuing into the cause of the smash.

The news was broken to his mother when she rang police to report him missing after he failed to turn up to practice, Senior Constable Fisher said.

A MAN has died in a single-car crash in Melbourne's southeast.

Victoria Police spokeswoman Belinda Batty said the man had run off the road while driving southbound along the EastLink toll road, near Ferntree Gully Rd, in Scoresby about 7pm.

Ms Batty said it was possible the man had "hit a light pole".

But she said police were still investigating the circumstances surrounding the deadly crash.

Whether the man had a medical condition that caused him to lose control of his car would be considered, Ms Batty said.

The man's death takes this year's road toll to 179 — 14 more than this time last year.

CFA crews also attended the scene to assist police.
