The father-and-son combination claimed their second win of the Australian Off Road Championship with victory in round four at Coffs Harbour on the weekend.
The triumph, in their V6 Nissan twin-turbo-powered Jimco buggy, moved them more than 100 points clear at the top of the standings.
Shannon, who drives the buggy with Ian as his navigator, said the win came with its challenges.
They were sixth-quickest in a 10-kilometre prologue on Saturday morning, before hitting the lead during the 150-kilometre first stage in the afternoon.
A five-minute overnight advantage quickly grew during the 250-kilometre stage two on Sunday, securing them back-to-back wins in the event.
They finished the 400 kilometres in five hours, nine minutes and 20 seconds, more than 10 minutes clear of New South Wales’ Matthew and Kerri Martin.
“They had a fair bit of rain leading up to the event. It made conditions fairly treacherous at times,” Shannon said.
“Up there we race through the forest. There were a lot of obstacles, lots of trees, lots of stumps, lots of undulations.
“And the rain made it very slippery in certain sections. But over the weekend it did dry out and by Sunday it was really good.”
The Coffs Harbour win came three months after the Rentschs won the Finke Desert Race, which doubled as round two.
They placed second in the other two rounds, at Kalgoorlie and Waikerie.
“The car we’ve got now we’ve been running for the last two seasons. It’s been really reliable,” Shannon said.
“The main thing is it’s been reliable and we’ve been fast. Hopefully we can keep that going.”
The final round of the championship is at Lockyer Valley, west of Brisbane, from October 17 to 19.
