Warrnambool teams filled the first three places in the annual Centenary Cup at the Younger Street course yesterday.
Club stalwarts Pat Robilliard, Marg Carroll and Helen Marris took out the 3BBB stroke event, finishing with 66 points after 18 holes.
They beat the team of Betty Holscher, Anne Hunt and Diana Robinson, who signed for 66 points.
Anne Glennen, Kathy Jenkins and Jenny Parsons were third with 68 points, with course knowledge proving helpful in wet conditions.
Warrnambool Golf Club women’s captain Alison Sinclair said the three teams were among a capacity field of 32 which braved the weather.
“It was tough with the wind and the rain. It was very windy. But the course was magnificent, just beautiful,” she said.
“Looking out the window now, it’s so nice. They put in new drainage this year on (holes) 17 and 18 and that made a big difference over the winter period.”
Warrnambool Golf Club created the Centenary Cup in 1995 to mark 100 years of golf in the coastal city. The tournament has run every year since.
Competitors yesterday hailed from as far away as Ballarat and Colac, as well as Port Fairy, East Framlingham, Hamilton and Camperdown, among others.
“We all try to support each other in big, major events and this is one of ours,” Sinclair said.
“Ladies will come and support us on these days and we likewise try to support them on their big days. It’s one of our prestigious events.”
The Centenary Cup was the last major event on the calendar.
Warrnambool golfers’ focus will turn to club championships, which start in mid-October.
