The gravel parking area off Grace Avenue has provided free parking for about 40 motorists a day, but after bitumen sealing and line marking the capacity will be almost doubled.
A disused shed at the western edge of the car park will be demolished to free up more space.
City council communications manager Nick Higgins said the $335,000 project, identified in the council’s city centre structure plan of 2012, was scheduled for completion by November.
“During construction those who usually park in Grace Avenue will need to find alternative parking,” he said.
“Once complete, parking will be $2 a day.”
