In the biggest match in Canberra soccer in recent years, Tuggeranong were beaten convincingly in front more than 5000 fans for the clash which put amateurs against professionals.

It was a superb night of top-level soccer and a chance for Tuggeranong players to take on their heros, but some visiting fans decided to spoil the party.

The night was an overwhelming success with a record crowd at Viking Park and Socceroos and A-League stars taking on students and tradies from around Canberra.

But it was marred just after half-time when it is alleged a group of fans lit flares, threw one on to the field and then held a banner as a sign of protest.

Police took details of at least one man who was involved in throwing flares on to the field as a fracas broke out on the hill.

The FFA has attempted to crack down on unruly fans who disrupt the game and the experience for other spectators.

Referee Ben Williams had to stop the game while security officials doused the flare on the field. They then turned their attention to trying to find the culprit, with one tackled to the ground and held by security until police arrived.

Another flare was thrown towards the Tuggeranong goal just minutes before full-time. The Victory stormed to a 6-0 win, with Besart Berisha scoring three goals in a dominant performance.

Tuggeranong United president Jon Thiele said the incident was the only downside to an otherwise roaring success.

"It was disappointing, I don't know if it marred the night but it was disappointing," Thiele said.

"We put on a great spectacle, the Melbourne Victory supporters soaked up the atmosphere. It's just a shame that a very small minority of supporters saw fit to do some sort of protest.

"I'm not sure what it was about. It didn't put a big dampener on it, it was just disappointing that it took away attention.

"Otherwise it was a massive success, Tuggeranong put on a good show. The culprit was apprehended and he'll be in the hands of police. We'll wait and see what the FFA say."
