Russell Amson, 38, of Ryan Court, Warrnambool, pleaded guilty in the Warrnambool Magistrates Court yesterday to assault and causing damage charges.
Magistrate Peter Mellas said he would adjourn sentencing until January 12 next year after Amson had started a men’s behaviour change program and counselling.
“We’ll see if you’re as good as your word,” he told Amson.
The defendant said he realised he needed to seek help after attempting to take his own life.
Police were called to an assault in Warrnambool’s Liebig Street at 11.45pm on May 31, where they found a woman lying on the floor of a restaurant complaining of bruising and swelling. She had her head rammed into the footpath by Amson.
They had been drinking at The Whalers Hotel before they were ejected and argued.
Amson then went to the woman’s home, turned off her fridge, threw food around and poured alcohol on the carpets.
Defence counsel Kathryn Moloney said her client was deeply ashamed of his actions. He had attempted self-harm and hoped to reconcile with the victim.
“He was so intoxicated he does not recall his behaviour with any clarity. His judgement was impaired,” she said.
