The 64-year-old Sunbury man called police on his mobile phone about 5.30pm after hurting himself near Deep Creek, during a five-day camping trip.
Police said an Air Wing was used to try to locate the experienced hiker, but the search was postponed until daylight after it was decided he was well-equipped to spend the night alone.
The SES and police rescue crew located the man on Saturday morning and tended to his injury until he could be treated by ambulance officers.
