Nicholson's appointment as the replacement for Paul Marsh, who has joined the AFL players' union, means two of the most influential positions in Australian cricket have been filled from football codes.

Cricket Australia's team performance boss, ex-Wallaby Pat Howard, initially met with some resistance from players when he was appointed as the single point of accountability in the wake of the Argus review, but his influence has since been hailed as crucial in the Test team's climb up the rankings.

It is significant that the ACA selection committee of Neil Maxwell, Lisa Sthalekar, Shane Watson and president Greg Dyer was prepared to reach outside cricket for its new chief, having been represented in the past by Marsh, who comes from a famous cricket family, and former Australian off-spinner Tim May.

Nicholson was a solid defender for the Demons, playing 110 games between 1997 and 2006 and matching up on star forwards such as Matthew Richardson and Barry Hall. During his playing career he was involved in the AFL's collective bargaining negotiations as an executive member of the AFLPA, and he has since worked as head of strategy for sports consultancy company Gemba.

"His exposure to the issues faced by athletes during his time with the AFLPA, combined with his roles at Gemba, make him a great choice for the position," Dyer said.
