Researchers from the university will hold a presentation at its Timor Street centre at 12.30pm today, to recruit women for the study.
Researcher Manuela Rigo said the study was looking for female volunteers aged between 16-50 years to take part to identify dietary and lifestyle activities that affected their iron and zinc levels, and investigate the effect of iron on women’s mood, fatigue and ability to concentrate.
Women are at greatest risk of iron deficiency due to regular losses of iron through menstruation and greater requirements during pregnancy. If the study participants are found to be low in iron, they will have the option to use a mobile phone application that sets dietary and lifestyle goals to increase their levels of easily absorbed iron and zinc levels.
Participants will also complete questionnaires about their lifestyles and health.
They will also do computer games to test their cognition, mood and fatigue and a fasting blood test to gauge their iron and zinc levels.
