The woman, aged in her 40s, was flown to the Royal Melbourne Hospital after the Mercedes in which she was a passenger left Castle Carey Road near Boorcan, hit a tree and rolled. It took emergency services 40 minutes to free the woman from the car.
The driver, Camperdown man Darren Oakes, died at the scene.
Mr Oakes, the brother of Corangamite Shire councillor Wayne Oakes, worked at Mortlake’s Abbeyfield House aged care hostel.
Abbeyfield House chief executive officer Gerry Kleisterlee said everyone was “shell shocked” yesterday.
“Darren will certainly will be missed, it’s very sad, everyone is shocked,” she said.
“Everyone here who knew him and worked with him will miss him terribly. His contribution was excellent and he will be greatly missed but not forgotten.”
