A court heard that after nine hours of eating and heavy drinking, Chinese businessman Kwon Chen and three friends entered a crowded lift about 4am. Chen, 49, and his business associates had performed their "best renditions of various songs" after sharing six bottles of red wine and a slab of stubbies.

But the County Court heard on Monday that not everyone on February 16 last year was on the same song sheet.

Prosecutor Nick Goodenough said a group of Asian males and females crowded into a lift outside the bar and that on the way down two occupants unknown to each other stood face to face and one made a comment.

Mr Goodenough said a woman tried to hold a man back from a confrontation but on the ground floor as the doors opened the group pushed each other out of the lift.

Judge Liz Gaynor heard that Chen lunged at one man and a "brawl erupted" that involved abuse, punches, kicks and weapons wielded that included belts, chairs and a broom.

Mr Goodenough detailed how Chen and a number of others were involved in various altercations that ultimately ended in three people being hospitalised.

Chen on Monday appealed to Judge Gaynor a magistrate's sentence from last July of an 18-month community corrections order, without conviction, with an order he do 250 hours of unpaid community work on a charge of affray.

His barrister Jason Gullaci conceded the incident had been "nasty" and that "better choices could have been made" by his client who was drunk after sharing the wine and beer.

Mr Gullaci said Chen, supported in court by his wife, a character referee and his cousin and business associate, was a director of five different businesses in China, Hong Kong and Canada, which included real estate and immigration interests.

Judge Gaynor set aside the magistrate's order and instead fined the father of three $2000 without conviction.

"No more fighting, Mr Chen," Judge Gaynor told him.

"No more behaving like an appalling Australian male."

Several others have also been prosecuted over the incident while a number have not been found by police.
