The Metropolitan Fire Brigade said seven trucks were on the scene at Hunter Street, near Bridge Road, and there was a lot of smoke in the area.
The fire started just after 4pm.
The blaze, in the single storey weatherboard house, was contained about 40 minutes later.
An MFB spokesman said the fire was "fully involved, the damage was severe and there was a chance it could have spread to adjacent homes."
He said a community warning was issued to locals due to the potential for inhaling smoke.
He said as yet there was not an estimate of the value of damage to the house and the cause will be investigated.
Paramedics treated the two residents at the scene for smoke inhalation but not transported to hospital.
