As one of just six regional Victoria restaurants awarded two or more hats this year, the hotel was also runner-up in a new category, best gourmet getaway, which recognises a restaurant delivering destination dining with accommodation to match.
In recent years the Dunkeld hotel has been awarded the guide’s top gong for Victoria’s best food, but after a year between chefs, the Royal Mail Hotel is back on The Age’s list.
Robin Wickens, who previously ran a gourmet provedore in Apollo Bay, took over the Grampians kitchen last September.
Wickens was delighted to receive the accolade at an awards ceremony held in Melbourne on Monday night, less than a full year after he arrived at Dunkeld.
“It’s a huge achievement and one I, and the whole team, am incredibly proud of,” he said. “We have recently implemented changes at the hotel, including the opening of a new wine bar space and the introduction of flexible, more casual, dining options.”
The hotel’s general manager Scott Horn was also delighted with the result.
“We are in a unique position at the hotel — our combination of award-winning food, wine, luxury accommodation, and access to nature is highly sought after,” Mr Horn said.
