The singer, presenting the award for Best Variety Series at the Los Angeles ceremony on Monday, stuffed up the name of Stephen Colbert's show, The Colbert Report.

Instead of rhyming "Colbert" with "debonair", she awarded the gong to something that sounded like the Colbor or Colbort report.

Stefani's co-presenter, Maroon Five's Adam Levine, showed why it pays to have two people doing the job.

"The Colbert Report," Levine quickly clarified.

Some on social media instantly forgave the former No Doubt frontwoman.

Others compared the faux pas to John Travolta's moment at this year's Tony Awards, when the actor went so far as to invent a name.

Travolta, presenting the award for Best Leading Actress in a Musical to Frozen's Idina Menzel, ended up congratulating "the wickedly talented, one and only, Adele Dazeem".

The Travolta nostalgia was enough for the hashtag #adeledazeem to begin trending on Twitter again.

Beyonce's pronunciation of "surfboard" as "surfbort", in her song Drunk In Love, also made a guest appearance on Twitter.

One Twitter user put Stefani's slip up down to the demands of motherhood. A mother of three, she attended the ceremony with her six-month-old son, Apollo.
