Reporter Justine Mackenzie and cameraman Glenn Edwards from the Channel Nine morning show explored the maritime village on Wednesday before taking a boat ride over to the island yesterday with the maremmas.
Flagstaff Hill manager Peter Abbott said segment would showcase Eduy and Tula to the nation.
“They came down from Melbourne and filmed at Flagstaff Hill on Wednesday,” he said. “They interviewed me talking about council’s role and filmed the dogs too.
“Then we went out on the Island and volunteers from the Warrnambool Coastcare Landcare group counted some chicks and penguins.”
Mr Abbott said the Today Show crew were impressed with Warrnambool and the maremma project.
“I told them the dogs are a much-loved part of the community,” he said.
“There is always a traffic jam of cars having a look when we take them over to Middle Island.”
Mr Abbott said there was some damage on the island due to last month’s wild storms.
“Some of the penguin boxes and walkways have damage,” he said. “Council will get involved in fixing that.”
Melanie Wells from Warrnambool Coastcare Landcare Group went over to the island with the camera crew.
“We had a look for the first time this season,” she said.
“We found about five breeding boroughs that we could reach, one of which had chicks that were over two weeks old.
“It’s a really good sign so far. The adult birds we found were healthy and a good weight.”
The Today Show segment is due to be screened next Thursday. For the correct time and date follow the Middle Island-Maremma Penguin Project on Facebook.
