VicRoads will make the closure to all through traffic from Wye River to Kennett River until Thursday August 28 at 6pm.
VicRoads regional director William Tieppo said all towns remained open for business but motorists should plan their route in advance and allow extra time.
“It is vital that people plan their journey and make decisions early before heading along the Great Ocean Road, so they can determine the most suitable route,” Mr Tieppo said.
“The local community is going to be considerably impacted, with drivers travelling between Apollo Bay and Lorne most affected with a long detour route in place.
“We have over 30 on road message boards to help drivers, in addition to the detour signage, so drivers don’t put themselves in a situation where they need to turn around when confronted with road closure barriers, which would further add to their trip."
Mr Tieppo said the closure was required to complete essential upgrade works to replace a large drainage pipe under the road and avoid future, longer term impacts.
“Closing the road is unavoidable but to minimise impacts VicRoads will be running 24 hour shifts to get the work done as quickly and as safely as possible.
“We have selected the quietest time of the year to do this closure and if we don’t act now, we risk an unplanned closure during peak times.
“We encourage everyone to help spread the word so inconvenience is minimised for all road users and the local community.”
