Under a new tender released this week, Victoria’s 141 mobile speed cameras will be replaced over the next four years with the new technology.

The new cameras will be designed to capture front and rear licence plates and speeding across multiple lanes, Minister for Police and Emergency Services Kim Wells said on Saturday. These features would help catch speeding motorcyclists who evade cameras because they do not have front number plates.

The  technology may also be more pervasive, as the Minister considers mobile cameras that would not need to be restricted to cars. He is also searching for cameras equipped with infrared technology that would enable night-time detection.

The current cameras, which are more than 20 years old, are limited to detecting speeding on just one lane and restricted to where the camera-equipped cars can park on the roads.

“Technology in this area is advancing rapidly and we will explore all options to make Victoria’s road safety camera network as strong as it can be,” Mr Wells said.

The Minister said expanding the speed camera system was a key part of Victoria’s 10-year Road Safety Strategy.

“We know speed cameras save lives and make Victorian roads safer,” he said. “We know the majority of motorists do the right thing and comply with the speed limit. The latest advances in technology can assist us in catching those who don’t.”

Last year, over 1 million infringement fines were issued by fixed or mobile speed cameras, the Victorian government's records show. From January to March this year, 300,000 speeding infringements have been issued.
