Capricorn Records announced yesterday it would shut permanently due to the “onset of advancing technology”.
Long-time music supporter and owner Michael Fitzgerald has run the business for 35 years, starting in Liebig Street and moving to a smaller Koroit Street shop in 2011.
The decision was announced on social media yesterday.
“Mick’s passion for music has given us all a chance to hear the music we love in a space that, for many, has become a second home,” the Capricorn Records’ Facebook page said. “His dedication to it has left an indelible mark on the fabric of the town.
“The passion for purchasing music hasn’t changed, but the buying mechanism sure has. We understand this. We could choose to be very angry and sad about it. Instead we would like to go out with a bang and with a smile on our face.”
The ARIA award-winning shop thanked its customers in the post: “Your support for our store has been epic over the journey and we are incredibly thankful for the great community that surrounds us.”
The shop will close its doors for good on September 26.
