The drop in the index follows a sharp jump of 9.9 per cent for May, indicating the volatility of the market.
June's result was weighed down by a sharp 10.5 per cent fall in private sector dwellings (excluding homes).
The other component of building approvals, private sector homes, fell by 2.2 per cent on a seasonally adjusted basis.
There were 15,659 building approvals nationally in June, up 16 per cent from the same month last year.
On a trend basis, there was a 1.1 per cent drop in approvals in June, consisting of an 0.4 per cent drop in homes and a 2.5 per cent drop in dwellings excluding homes.
