A strong cold front over the region is moving east, with a band of rain and strong to gale force north to northwesterly winds.
According to the Bureau of Meteorology, a change is expected with colder westerly winds, which will then shift southwesterly on Friday.
Damaging winds 60 to 70 km/h with peak gusts of 100 to 110 km/h are forecast for the south-west, with a low risk of some squalls around 125km/h with the front.
Winds gusts to around 90 km/h associated with heavy showers or thunderstorms are possible Friday.
Up until 2.30pm on Thursday, the strongest gust recorded at the Warrnambool Airport was 83 km/h about 10.30am.
The State Emergency Service advised people to keep clear of fallen power lines, move vehicles under cover or away from trees, and secure or put away loose items around your house and yard.
