Jason, 14, swam the qualifying times for the 50-metre backstroke and 50m breaststroke and will take the opportunity to test himself against older competitors at the Victorian open shortcourse swimming championships in Melbourne.
Warrnambool coach Jayson Lamb said Jason would use the event as learning curve.
“He’ll go and experience competing against some good opponents but without any pressure on him,” he said.
“He is keen and wants to take the next step so it’s a stepping stone for him.”
Two of the club’s multi-class swimmers — Ashleigh Pettigrew and Caitlyn Mackay — will also compete at the two-day meet at Melbourne Sports and Aquatic Centre.
Ashleigh is entered in nine events and Caitlyn will test herself in eight.
“The girls should compete quite well,” Lamb said.
“They have been training well so I expect PBs from them.”
The open and multi-class shortcourse titles will also include the 11 and 12-year-old age groups.
Lamb expects Warrnambool to send a strong contingent to that event.
